Brief Charlotte Weekend Recap

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Amelia forgot to tell me her thoughts last Thursday and then we went out of town and didn’t take any pictures.

However, Amelia did great on our drive up to Charlotte to visit friends.  She LOVED their dog, Sierra.  LOVED.  Sierra would lick and Amelia would giggle - it was fun to watch.  And no allergic reaction we could see which is so nice.  Maybe she won’t be allergic to everything afterall (knocking on wood).  She also copied Brent once and said ‘apple’ and I think I got her to say ‘yellow’ once as well.  Her language seems to be developing faster now - both words and signs, which is very useful.  Soon we’ll be having conversations and I’ll wonder where my babbler went.

We enjoyed great food and wine and company, and the drive wasn’t too bad.  Shame its so hard to rely on finding gas, but luckily I got 10 gallons this morning and can come to work this week.

Oh can anyone tell me how Amelia knows its Sunday night and to have a bad night??

Hope everyone else had a good weekend,

Kelly

14 Months Old

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Dearest Amelia,

Today you are fourteen months old.  Its been a difficult month, but with many accomplishments as well.

We struggled through a virus, getting your first molar and salmonella.  You’ve been back at daycare for 2 days and your nose is already starting to run.  Hopefully the fall will bring on healthier times!  Luckily when you are sick, you are generally only a bit clingier.  Okay a lot clingier.  But I don’t mind the cuddles and time I’ve gotten to hold you.  I love holding my baby like a baby because I know I won’t get that often as you grow.

The benefit to all the sickness is how much more time I’ve had with you the last couple weeks.  You are a sponge right now, absorbing everything around you so its really enjoyable to help you along the way.  I haven’t been as good about writing everything down as it happens but right now words you say which I generally recognize - up, all done, mama, dada, down, sta (for outside), thank you (well its more like tha tha but its consistent and fairly recognizable).  Its so cute you say thank you when you hand us items - probably because we’ve always thanked you for handing us items you weren’t supposed to have or we needed you to give up.  Now you love to give us anything you can find and say tha tha.

You have been progressing with sign language as well - using more, thank you, hungry and sleep/nap.  I’ve seen you use please and dog but these are more rare still.  Its very useful when you can tell me these things, and I’m so glad they are really working hard at daycare with you.  Oh I forgot your favorite!  You love the ‘clean hands’ sign and then I give you a wipe and you wipe your hands - too cute.

Sleeping this month has been … interesting.  It seems like 50% of the time, no problem, sleep through the night.  25% of the time there might need to be help finding your pacifier in the crib (how you lose all 3 I don’t know).  Then there is the other 25% - you might need water, or milk or patting and you are hysterical.  I think you’d rather be asleep but for some reason (teeth? diaper?) you aren’t.  Its rough on all of us.  The first few days of the salmonella illness were particularly bad as you started to really fight the diaper changes and couldn’t even be managed by one of us - it took two.  Luckily other than one bad night, we’ve had about 4 - 5 good nights so I’m thinking we are through the worst from that… hopefully you go back to being the good sleeper we know you can be!

You still love your morning and evening bottles - love them.  Hold them like they are your baby.  Maybe a little obsessed even.  So that should be fun - I vow to break it before we go back and see Dr. Hines for the 15 month appointment.  We had planned to do it a couple weeks ago, but you then were sick so its been pushed back.  I have to say, kind of dreading it but maybe you’ll switch no problem.  We’ll see.  I’m sure I will blog about it. Right now not even considering breaking the paci habit - though you mainly only have them at night/naps unless you are extremely cranky for some reason (oh, like the other 3 molars trying to come in right now - seriously how long does this take?).

You love your babies and your stuffed animals, and really any toy can substitute.  You hug them and pat them and mother them before tossing them aside.  There is not one toy that has stood out yet as your favorite, you still love them all for minutes at a time before moving on to another.   Well let me add some context to that - balls of any kind are your favorite toy.  Doesn’t matter what kind of ball, you love playing with balls and are getting pretty good at throwing them in the direction you want.  Which means you are purposely throwing them under the couch because its funny - thanks for that.  Hopefully we can translate your love of balls into your love of football and basketball.  Daddy’s school has a big game on Saturday - say ‘Go Dawgs!’

Other fun things - you love to dance still and have added new moves.  I have documented that well on this blog.  We’ve been going to music class and your favorite part is getting to crawl into the middle to grab whatever the teacher has thrown out there - so far you tend to go for the drum sticks first but you do like the rattles as well.  You know when I am putting on your shoes/socks that you can help by trying to give me that foot.   You are starting to enjoy climbing up things and will climb up me to give me a hug, or more likely get to something you saw me stash behind me like a phone or a remote.  You love the outside and pointing to everything you see.  You give the best kisses (still open mouth) and you blow kisses as well.  You still don’t want to walk alone more than a couple steps, but you cruise and turbo crawl with the best of them (and can walk just fine holding onto one of our hands so I think you are just too stubborn to let go).

They say it just keeps getting better, and I can truly say I am loving how fast you learn things and how much more you can interact with us.  It doesn’t mean I didn’t think the baby stage was wonderful - I loved the baby stage, having my head laying against yours and that baby smell.  But its also exciting to see you becoming a true toddler and developing your personality which appears to be fairly independent and strong willed.  Don’t know where you get that from… ;)  But you are loving and happy and friendly as well, things I hope stay with you always.

This is you trying to put the headband back on yourself.

This is you mad at me for taking away the real phone… you know its off limits!  But you look so sad….

Bridge anyone? Apparently Nonni is teaching you.

I love you baby girl.  I am looking forward to a great few fall months - visiting friends, going to a pumpkin patch, eating turkey at Thanksgiving and other wonderful fall and holiday events.

Love,

Momma

12 Hours in Atlanta

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

So one of the blogs I like to read throughout the week, in fact, the one who I got the newsletter idea from - is The Amateur Gourmet.  He actually went to Law School with a fellow mom in my neighborhood who knew I liked food and I liked blogs (thanks Olivia!).  Recently he posed the question - if you had 12 hours left in your city - what would you do (eat, see, etc.).  And you get to choose which hours of the day - so here it goes….

What would I do with 12 hours in Atlanta.   I choose 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  since I’m an early bird and I’m assuming I have a babysitter for the day.  It’d probably also be a Saturday, because brunch is my favorite meal and all the good restaurants only do brunch on weekends and you can only drink at brunch before noon on a Sunday.

I would start with coffee at Joe’s in East Atlanta on one of their comfy couches - I haven’t been there in a few years, I hope its still there.   I’d probably read a Wall Street Journal, the only paper I really like to read these days.  Either that or one of my many parenting magazines I seem to get that I don’t remember signing up for.

After coffee (no pastry, saving up room), I’d head to Murphy’s in Virginia Highlands for brunch.  I love Murphy’s.   I could eat anything on their menu, but it’d be something with cheese, bacon, eggs and potatoes all smothered together in a skillet.  And a mimosa, and maybe even more coffee with their biscuit on the side. Yum.

Assuming I could roll myself out of Murphy’s,  I’d spend the afternoon outdoors in a park, walking around, hanging out with friends, maybe with my daughter at a playground.  I love many of Atlanta’s outdoor spaces and really its hard to pick.  Maybe for this I’d go with Stone Mountain park.

Really I’d skip most the tourist stuff - doesn’t draw me in Atlanta.  I might stop by one of the museum’s but I’m not really that into them.  I might stop by one of my favorite little galleries - Vinings Gallery - to look at the art.  I really enjoy Thomas Arvid and Michael Flohr and more recently Joline Pol - all there at that gallery.

Dinner - hands down my favorite steakhouse - Kevin Rathbun Steak.  I’m drooling thinking about it.  Great wine list, great service, the best steak I’ve ever had - the porterhouse for 2… Sighs of happiness.  I’d restrain myself from dessert there and head to Cafe Intermezzo for more coffee & dessert finishing the day.

Fun to think about!

What would you do in your city?

The Dancing Salmonella Baby

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

So the weirdest thing about this past week, while Amelia’s lower digestive track was under mass distress - is she was often feeling quite cheerful, playful self.  There were times when she was more clingy and more tired than others - but then there were times like last night.  Would you think this baby was sick?  Isn’t she adorable with her new dance moves?  No wonder some of the doctors thought I was crazy (until they saw her diapers that is).  And at the very end of the video you can see her climb up on her toy - its just a small step but she’s just becoming more daring in that regards.  Should make the next few weeks interesting!  I hope everyone has a good weekend planned - Chris & I are going to have a night out to recouperate from the past week, and we also plan to take Amelia to a makeup music class as well as her regularly scheduled one - she loves being with other kids and I know it’ll make her weekend special for her.

Enjoy the video of my dancing salmonella baby.

Have a great Friday - Baby Momma

Amelia’s Thursday Thoughts: September 18, 2008

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Hi there!  Its me, Amelia.  I’ve snuck onto the computer while my grandparents babysit me today.  They let me get away with anything. (Love you grand pappy and nonni!)

SO it turns out the reason why I’ve had all these nasty diapers and this awful rash on my tush — I have salmonella.  Can you believe it?  Who knows from what, but now I’m on some antibiotics to finally get it out of my system since 6 days in I still wasn’t over it. This has not been fun at all, but at least I got to spend lots of quality time with my mom.

I’m actually feeling pretty well now, and I can’t wait to start seeing other kids again.  This weekend we’ll have music class and next week - back to Primrose.  I can’t wait to see my friends.  I miss other kids.  Mom is great and all, but she isn’t small like me and doesn’t understand why I want to feed myself with a spoon.

Yesterday we had a bit of a dance party so mom will be posting that video soon - I love to dance and I have some new moves now.  An arm swing dance move.  Its cool….

I hope everyone is having a better week than we have had - but we are all doing much better now.

Love,

Amelia

What to do with a sick baby…

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Well, here’s the thing.  Amelia isn’t acting sick really, especially not anymore, beyond wanting an extra cuddle or two.  She just can’t be around other children as long as she keeps going to the bathroom so often…. which means she is really her active toddler self, wanting lots of entertainment.

Which meant that yesterday she got a new toy - this lead to over an hour of entertainment so I think it was a good pick.  Amelia loves balls, loves throwing and bouncing and rolling them.  Now she has balls that can go in a hoop!  The joy!  Its really a bathtime toy but it worked outside the bath - the hoop didn’t stay up if she put weight on it, so she played with it on the floor for a long time too, putting balls in, taking them out.  I’m using it as a learn color activity as well - but I think she’s mostly ignoring me.

She’s also getting fed lots of applesauce, oatmeal, purees, etc as her tummy heals.  So I’m trying to let her learn how to use a spoon - partly driven by the fact that she often won’t let me feed her anymore.  She’s doing pretty well as long as she gets the spoon gripped right - her main issue is she sometimes turns it over before it gets to her mouth - which leaves it on her bib.  She’s very proud when she does it herself though.

Sometimes she gets annoyed at the spoon and just goes in with her hands…. I’m trying to discourage this but its kind of funny.

Most of you who read this blog know Amelia is a pacifier baby (remember the ring of pacis post?).  To keep the pacis in the crib, we use a breathable bumper that sticks up just a couple inches - it works great so she doesn’t lose them.  Well we decided to sterilize everything over the weekend, including those, so off they went and they weren’t ready before it was time for her to go to sleep - it won’t be a problem we thought …  she’ll call for us if she needs us (like if she can’t find any pacis).  Um…. yeah.  She decided to ‘teeth’ on the bed instead.  The bumpers are back in.

I’m happy to report none of her friends have come down with this and neither have myself or Baby Daddy.  So we are hopeful its not contagious - just hoping she’ll get the rest of it out of her system soon!  We had a slight set back yesterday, but we’re hopeful again today.

Is it really only Tuesday?

Update

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Well we do have a pretty sick baby… she’s getting much better though so thanks for all the well wishes.  We don’t know for sure what it is - some sort of colitis (infection in the colon).  But she’s feverless today and seems to be in good spirits as long as you don’t touch the diaper.  (Never seen such a rash!)

She has been using signs pretty well this whole time (though she’s combined more and hurt into one sign so that’s a little confusing for us).  She has signed nap - which is very adorable - and she uses a sign for ‘wash hands’ that I guess they learned at daycare.  She is saying something that resembles ‘thank you’ - and definitely saying it at a time that would be appropriate.  So that part of this time with her has been fun.

I’m sad she had to miss her music class again - we’ve been playing the cd for her and she loves the music.  Maybe we can do a make up so she can go twice next week!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend,

Kelly

Does she look sick to you?

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Last night we noticed Amelia had just over 100 fever - though can you tell by these photos?  You can see we are in another phase of ‘the tongue’.

Unfortunately she woke up at 2am with 102 and other symptoms so home sick today - I was really hoping it was teething.  And she seems entralled with the Barney tv show I put on tv, so I think I’m doomed.

PS Here’s a fun picture from earlier in the week:

Amelia’s Thursday Thoughts: September 11, 2008

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Mom is somewhat somber today - she told me to keep lots of families in my thoughts as something terrible happened 7 years ago.  She remembers watching it unfold and hopes I won’t have to see something like that happen and hopes to keep me safe.  She gave me a really really big hug and kiss this morning.

I’m going to leave my thoughts at that today - I’ll ask that everyone pray according to their beliefs not only in memory, but in hope for the future as well.

Love,

Amelia

Go Duke!

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

So Amelia has ‘wear your favorite team shirt’ to school today - well we’ve slacked about getting her fall football gear yet, so we broke out the 24 months Duke cheerleading outfit that is for this winter basketball season - it was suprisingly only a tiny bit big - she looked so cute.  She is also wearing a very cute Duke pink headband (thanks Asha!).  These pictures are from my cell - I’ll update with better quality tonight if I get some.

Duke football has a new coach and we are all excited as we try to go for win #2 this weekend after a tough lostt to Northwestern last weekend.  So Go Blue Devils!

And for Amelia’s baby daddy - go Georgia Bulldogs! (Outfit to come soon)

Enjoy!
