Like Mother, Like Daughter?

  • Posted on October 28, 2009 at 9:34 am

I keep trying to find myself in my kids…I think its human nature to want to see yourself in your kids.  I think K might actually look a bit more like me than A does… but we’ll have to see as they get older.  There is no doubt who A looks like.

2008_12_24_004

Here she is pictured with her dad, her aunt and her cousin.  Yeah um… she looks just like her aunt.  And when I was a toddler – I wasn’t anywhere near what A is with hair… I had a lot of it but no curls, no dark hair – it was actually light.

And yet another picture to show A fits right in with her dad’s family – here is her dad & his siblings when they were young.

Now as babies… well still didn’t look like me.   But they do look like each other – the funny thing is – this is K at only 2 months and A at almost 6 months… but as I just posted it, they look really similar in these two photos.  Much more so than if you compare both of them at 2 months.  Interesting… I do think K’s hair is lighter and she has the potential for more of my coloring… we’ll see.

Me at… I don’t know!   There are some similarities… baby kelly-2 baby kelly-4

Couple more of me.  My face was longer than theirs… I think that is a big part of the difference.  That and I appeared cross eyed.  Sigh.

I love my girls, and just wanted to take a fun trip down memory lane today.

Baby Ballerinas

  • Posted on October 26, 2009 at 5:47 am

So my mom had given A a ballerina outfit in the spring – and with Halloween approaching I thought A would love being a ballerina, afterall she loves to dance.  It just so happens her cousin L is enrolled in Mommy & Me ballet and so she was going to also be a ballerina for Halloween.  We got them together over the weekend for a pre-Halloween picture opportunity.  They were having so much fun, dancing, playing, crawling after each other, rolling around on the floor laughing… We got great video but video editing seems to take a bit too much time these days (I promise to do it soon) – so here are a few photos.

27 Months Old

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 6:27 pm

Dearest A,

You are 27 months old today!  It was this time last year you learned to walk, and look at you now – running, jumping, loving Little Gym… hard to believe.

There are so many things in my head I’m having trouble figuring out what to write – so I might just write it in categories, a switch from my normal letter to you.

Creativity: You are really showing a creative side as of late, changing words to songs, making up your own songs.  Its really adorable.  The other day, ‘Mary had a little pumpkin, little pumpkin, little pumpkin…’ – perfect for this time of year!  You also have ‘caught bugs’ – you saw us trying to catch a fruit fly by clapping at it and copy us and you always catch one according to you.  The flip side of your imagination is sometimes you make up things that scare you – somehow you saw a choo choo train out the front door that terrified you.  It was heartbreaking to see you so upset, and we couldn’t figure out why – I think it was something you imagined from maybe a car driving by?  Regardless, I enjoy seeing your creativity and imagination grow.

Independence:  Boy, you sure got that from us.  I mean I’m glad you are independent but it does make for some difficult encounters these days.  We try to let you do what you can within reason – but we draw the line on some things.  For example, only mommy & daddy are allowed to pump the lotion, though you are allowed to apply it.  We had a full on tantrum from you since you weren’t allowed to pump it.  I get that you want to do everything yourself – I do.  We are the same way.  And someday, you will get to pump the lotion.  In the meantime you are doing great with putting on your shoes, picking out your hairbows or ponytail holders and sometimes even your outfit.  Lately you are obsessed with wearing skirts but we can sometimes distract you into other outfits.

Big Sister:  You love giving baby K hugs & kisses – you are so sweet.  The funny thing is how you only want to play with her toys instead of your own – guess we don’t need to buy you anything new, just need to get out more old toys!  We got the bumbo out for K and you insist on sitting and getting stuck on a regular basis – its pretty funny.  You also now insist on being carried up and down the stairs – I think this is because K gets to be carried all the time.  You sometimes get a little jealous of the attention K gets, but really you are a great big sister and I can tell you really love your sister.

Music & More:  You love to sing & dance and seem to show good rhythm when clapping along with the Little Einsteins on Disney Channel.  You get that from me.  Trust me on that one.  I hope you will eventually be interested in learning a musical instrument, even if it doesn’t lead toward being a huge part of your life like it was for me.  I think just understanding and appreciating music is a gift and valuable part of life – and hopefully you will continue to love it.

Language:  Each day you get better at verbalizing your thoughts.  One of my favorite things you’ve said lately… you ran up to K who was asleep in her swing and said ‘Hey K.., whatcha doin?’.  So cute.  But you get complete sentences now, 6 and 7 words long.  You can sing your ABCs, multiple songs, count to 14 (Sometimes skipping 4 – 6) and really start telling us your wants & needs.  Sometimes it still sounds like you are speaking a foreign language, but we really are getting to understand you more and its very helpful in figuring out when you are upset.

Misc:  You’ve started liking sweets finally – you were introduced to candy corn and pez and both are big hits… you didn’t eat the cupcakes we made together yet (shown in pictures below) but I think when Nonni asks you to eat one tomorrow for her bday you will.  You DID eat some of the batter (no raw egg obviously, since you are egg allergic), and liked that.     You are also still really slow at eating – and apparently its not just at home.  You are the slowest at school as well – often still at the table while other kids are off singing & playing…. guess eating slow isn’t a bad thing, its just a funny trait that we don’t know where you picked it up from. I think its that you have to tell us about everything multiple times (this pasta touched the table, this pasta touched the table….).  Its adorable and uniquely you.  Love you slowpoke.

There are so many other fun things but the list would go on & on…. here are a couple cute pictures from the last couple of days.

I loved making cupcakes together – our first special baking together memory.  I hope you remember it fondly.

Rooms Fit For Little Girls

  • Posted on October 23, 2009 at 9:57 am

We finally, yes finally, have gotten the girls’ rooms all put together after moving toddler A to what was previously the guest room, and then re-working the nursery so that K got her own theme, unique from what it was for A.  The only tiny little piece left is for K to get her name above her closet – but I went ahead and took pictures.  I love how these rooms look & feel.  Cozy with rocking chairs.  They have girly touches everywhere – with splashes of pink.  Unique for each of them though similar too.  I decorate pretty simply in general, and these rooms go with that – adding color splashes to a neutral base.  We love dark wood, which should be obvious – both their furniture sets are theirs until they go to college – they both become toddler beds and then full beds.  We picked furniture that is hopefully simple enough, yet stylish enough so they’ll be happy with it as they grow older.  Teenage girls – well teenage girls won’t be happy with anything probably but its our hope they will love this always.  A common theme in both rooms is teddy bears – I love teddy bears and collected beanie baby bears for my future kids – so glad I’ve gotten to use them!

Also note the photography – we love photography ourselves, but we have to give credit that all of these photos are done by our wonderful friend and photographer Elizabeth of LibbieWicket

First up, A’s toddler girl room.  We took her theme from her nursery and just expanded upon it.  Pinks & browns & bugs.  Lady bugs and dragonflies mostly.  A few fun things to note – the pink circles and brown name are the latest ‘trend’ – vinyl – so easy to apply and I love how it looks.  And it will come down easy from what they say.  Also – the train table – my dad made that for A.  She loves it.  Even more special – the cradle for her baby doll next to it, he made that for me when I was a young kid.  I love that these are unique items you won’t find at a store, special for my special little girl.  You may not be able to tell from the photos, but this bedroom is really big, especially for a little girl.  However, it works out perfect as A likes to dance around and practice her Little Gym moves.

2009_10_23_AsRoom-012009_10_23_AsRoom-022009_10_23_AsRoom-032009_10_23_AsRoom-042009_10_23_AsRoom-052009_10_23_AsRoom-062009_10_23_AsRoom-072009_10_23_AsRoom-082009_10_23_AsRoom-092009_10_23_AsRoom-102009_10_23_AsRoom-11

Next is the nursery – what used to be pink & brown & bugs is now pink, yellow & green – with dots & flowers.  (With bears & elephants thrown in…)  The green rocker used to be in our bedroom but fits so well with K’s room, that I think it’ll stay with her.  The wooden shelf is another piece of woodwork from my dad – thanks dad!

These rooms aren’t fancy but they are comfortable, warm loving spaces for my girls to grow in… they fit us perfectly.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into our home of rooms fit for little girls.

2 Months

Dear K,

Wow you are two months old already baby K.  Time really does fly by these days.  I love that you are becoming more aware and interactive with your surroundings.  Look at you posing so cute for the camera.  (Yes you will get used to it, your mom loves to take pictures).2009_10_20_K-1

You are doing so well.  You sleep 6 – 7 hours at night now in a bouncer in our room (plan is to move you to your room THIS weekend – big weekend!), and eat your 6 bottles a day like a champ – you still nap inbetween all your bottles for at least a little bit.  Considering you have reflux, you are very happy and laid back.  The medicines seem to work well for you, though due to your love of eating we need to increase it for your weight I think.  We are coming to a time when they will tell us you don’t need your apnea monitor anymore.  That’s going to be hard for us – we’ll have to gradually stop using it.  I still remember seeing you in the hospital that awful day, so tiny with so many medical things around you.  I no longer re-live it daily but I still re-live it a couple times a week so it might be awhile until I can go truly monitor free.  We’ve probably spoiled you a bit because of it – so enjoy!  Your sister was already in her room (at 3 weeks old I think) and made to go to sleep without any aid.  You get a bouncer in our room with vibration.  Well you did.  Now that you are 2 months old – we might have some tough love and you will actually be in your crib.  You are an independent spirit so I think you’ll do just fine.  It’s us I’m worried about.

You now love your bath time and try to eat the water.  We do dance parties most afternoon, listening to a playlist on my iPhone and just enjoying the day.  You like your tummy time or playmat time for a few minutes, but you perfer playing with mommy, daddy or sister.  A loves being a big sister and is constantly giving you hugs and kisses and she tries to be gentle – we are working on it.  Hopefully you survive her love.

2009_10_20_K-2

We tried the bumbo for the first time today since you seem so strong - you liked it the first time for a couple minutes but the second time you were tired and well – figured I’d capture that moment as well.  You don’t smile all the time afterall – just most of the time.

2009_10_20_K-3

Below is one of my favorite perspectives – I love looking at my girls as I hold you in my arms… I never managed to capture it quite right in a photo with your sister but this one came out really good – this is a view I love.  Look at your little nose and eyelashes – just love it.

2009_10_20_K-4

I had to also capture my Frankenstein baby!  Both you and your sister would hold your arms .. oddly… during naps.  Had to get a picture of it – its just too funny.  Your dad says I still sleep with my arms in funny positions so its something you got from me.

2009_10_20_K-5

And just for fun, a side by side comparison of my two girls at two months of age… K you actually have more hair than A - she was losing hers pretty fast by this point.  And due to perspective you can’t tell but you are probably 1 – 2 lbs heavier since you started off bigger.  I think you can say that you two definitely look like sisters, but that you both really have such a wonderful and beautiful uniqueness that is your own as well.

 2009_10_20_K-12009_10_20_AM-1

Baby K – you have brought even more love into our lives.  We love being our family of four and are so blessed you are here with us.

We love you,

Mom

Just thought I needed to have a post to acknowledge that while I’m somewhat sleep deprived, and really wish we’d have more sunny days like today (need a break from rain!), I feel truly blessed to have these two beautiful girls in my life as well as my wonderful husband.

Pumpkin Patch Fun

  • Posted on October 12, 2009 at 5:44 am

Its hard to believe that this time last year is when toddler A got her first haircut and learned to walk while at a church pumpkin patch.

2008_10_18_014

Skip a year forward and we joined A’s friend G on a trip to Berry Patch Farms. So glad we got there when it opened, cars just streamed in non-stop all day and we at least didn’t have too much chaos by being an early bird. It was a great setup – face painting, picture taking area, farm animals, fried pies (yum) & apple cider and a tractor pulled hayride to the pumpkin area – not a true patch they had placed pumpkins there but it worked great. They had it so you walked through an area that seemed like a patch seeded with tiny pumpkins (A loved these), and then there was a huge field of big ones. We had a great time. K slept through it all but it was a good family day. Here are some of our pics.
(Note: We had a hard time getting good photos with the toddlers running in all directions – we never seemed to have time to adjust settings so the pictures would come out ‘right’ – but we still got some cute ones… just annoys us a bit since we like photography as a hobby – sigh)

Since K slept through it, here are a few of her later in the day.

First Family Outing

  • Posted on October 4, 2009 at 3:31 pm

We finally went on our first full family outing this morning – to the Atlanta zoo!  A loves the zoo, so when her friend G’s family said they were going – we decided to join them.  Baby K went but slept through the whole thing which actually works quite nicely.

I think I took 100+ pictures at the zoo, but here are just a few fun ones.  A’s favorite part (probably mine too) – is the new parakeet exhibit where you pay $1 for a stick of bird seed and the birds come land on you and eat it – very interactive and they are so beautiful.  It was hard for her to concentrate just on the one on her stick when so many were around and above her – but she loved it.

2009_10_4_-0282009_10_4_-0402009_10_4_-0452009_10_4_-0692009_10_4_-0552009_10_4_-057

A couldn’t see the elephant at one point, and when we asked her where it was, this is her saying, I don’t know.  She moved over and could see it after that.

2009_10_4_-018

As I mentioned, K slept snug as a bug the whole time.

Look pandas!  Okay maybe its just our kids…

And more random fun…

Maybe next time we’ll se you at the zoo!

K is for.. Baby K!

  • Posted on October 3, 2009 at 11:59 am

One of the cute gifts we got for baby K was this adorable monogrammed onesie – and since she is growing so fast, we wanted to make sure to take some pictures of her in it.  Luckily K was okay with that and posed quite nicely for mommy.  I even captured a couple of her almost smiles (she does have a big ol’ crooked that is awesome but she didn’t use it during her photoshoot).  She’s definitely becoming a lot more interactive lately - learning expressions and spending more waketime with us.  Its fun to see her grow!
