As expected, she wasn’t the biggest fan of her first bath….

The Birth of Baby K

  • Posted on August 29, 2009 at 3:57 pm

To understand the birth story of Baby K, you need to know at least a few details about the birth of Toddler A.  A was due 8/11/07.  During my third trimester with her I was diagnosed with gestation diabetes, and so we got size ultrasounds to make sure she wasn’t running to big.  During the 36 week ultrasound we noticed my fluids were really low so we were monitored closely and once I was 37 weeks along – off to the hospital we went to be induced.  28 hours later, I wasn’t going to progress and we were told that these birthing hips I’ve carried my whole life were having a c-section.  While I had an emotional moment, the important thing was that A was born safely on 7/24/07 at a whopping 6 lbs 4 ozand 18 1/2 inches long (so much for the big baby!)

This time around, I did not get gestation diabetes (yeah for ice cream!), but still had ultrasounds due to the prior low fluids.  32 weeks – no issue.  35 weeks no issue.  The doctors thought we were in the clear – I still had plenty in there.  At 37 weeks this baby dropped down into position and I started having contractions.  Uncomfortable contractions.  They’d check – no progress.  And they weren’t close enough to be the kind to send you to the hospital.  Another week goes by, another night of even more uncomfortable contractions, but still very little progress (some effacement, no dilation).  I have a feeling my body was acting like a 1st pregnancy since I never really progressed with A.  So home again.  That was Thursday.  I was convinced that by now I was waiting until the scheduled c-section on 8/28 (since I had the prior c-section, we went with the recommendation to have a 2nd c).  I just had a feeling this baby wanted to be a Leo like her mommy and sister though…. just kept sticking around but she only had two days left to make that deadline.  Friday I was having contractions again – still inconsistent.  However around 11ish, I realized I hadn’t felt the baby move since I woke up – highly unusual.  She always had at least one – two sessions of heavy activity each morning.  For a few minutes I held my calm – I ate some sugar since she typically responded to that – nothing.  Then I called the doctor assuming they would tell me to just lay down for awhile, try x y z… nope told me to come in for an appointment.  Then I freaked – called hubby in tears – he came home and drove me to the doctor.  There is something to mother’s instinct – if you are pregnant or going to be pregnant – trust your instincts.  The stress test was fine – her heart rate was great but still very little movement.  THe ultrasound?  Essentially no fluid.  Again.  Dangerously low fluid.  And still no movement – probably because nothing to move in.  Off to the hospital we went!  At least we were more prepared this time around – and knowing it would be a c it would be a couple hours, not 28 like the first time.  Unfortunately my parents couldn’t get there in the short period of time but Chris’ did – so we had some grandparents at least.  Big thanks to our friends Heather & Chris who took care of Amelia for us until grandparents could go home to her as well.  C-section went very standard – at 5:43 baby K was born – just hearing her cry brought tears of joy to my eye.  She weighed in at 7 lbs 9 oz and 19 inches – a big difference from our little 6 lb-er!  The staff at Piedmont hospital was wonderful throughout the whole process and the doctors of my practice were great as well.  I hightly recommend Peachtree Women’s Specialists if you are looking for a recommendation.  Baby K did have some fluid in her lungs, fairly common for a c-section but after an hour in the transition room she was in my arms, as wonderful as could be.  Our love just expands more and more – both for baby K and toddler A as we see how excited she is to be a big sister.  Thank you to everyone for your support, and we can’t wait for all of you to meet baby K.

25 Months Old

Dear Amelia,

Today you are 2 years and 1 month old – 25 months total!  I’m writing this a bit early in case your baby sister arrives sooner than expected, but I wanted to make sure we told you a couple of things.

Even though you will soon have to share the house with a sibling, our love for you will just continue to grow like it does every day.  In fact, I feel giving you a sister really makes our family complete and I think it is a gift you will treasure the rest of your life.  It doesn’t mean we won’t have times when you don’t understand why she might get more attention, and I do believe the first two years might be the most rough, but I think you will be a great big sister.  We love you very much, and will try our best to give you the attention you deserve.  Just remember – this just increases our capacity to love even more.

It seems like becoming 2 really did change things.  We seem to have more ‘sensitivity’ outbursts when you want something and don’t get it (when you wanted 3 animal crackers and I gave you 2 for example).  This can be followed by such an outpouring of love from you, and a great mood, that its very perplexing but I guess its just you being 2.  We’re trying to hold our ground on the things that matter – like making you listen when you need a diaper or its something potentially dangerous, etc.  But we’re also trying to give you lots of love & hugs.

Some of my favorite things that you’ve started to do:

- you ask us to come ‘sit on bottom, please’ when you want us next to you on the floor playing.  (We often have to prompt for the please)

- you involve your stuffed animals in your play & activities – lamby now ‘turns on/off’ the light in your bedroom with your help and you tell lamby ‘good job lamby’; the bear often does night time prayers with us as you hold his hands together; you read to your animals like they read to you at daycare – maybe you are destined to be a teacher

- you only eat grape tomatoes if you pick them off the plant and eat them right then & there (guess there are worse things than not getting to wash them, least they are organically grown!); my theory is you like the sun warmed

- your delight in shredded wheat is that you drown them in your soy milk and eat them all filled with milk (also works with the strawberry smart start I recently bought you)

- we must tell you ‘be careful’ a lot because now its one of your most common phrases before doing things like getting on the step stool to turn off your light

- our good friends have baby alec and now when you see the baby boys at daycare you say ‘Alec!’

- you love to rough house with daddy and you do the elephant dance before you go to bed at night (which involves you jumping around in circles then falling down laughing – we think you got it from Mickey Mouse clubhouse)

You are still are good eater and sleeper for the most part.  We often will hear you once during a night, but you don’t usually need us.  You have started acting like you might try to get out of your crib yourself so we are having to watch that.   I’m not ready to move you to a big girl bed quite yet.   Your language is definitely improving though I think sometimes you speak intelligibly on purpose… or maybe its a nother language.  We aren’t quite sure.  You’ve gotten up to 3 & 4 word sentences though and you also use adjectives like yucky, dirty and yummy.  You also still sign like a champ – you know signs I didn’t know you knew – the other day you said & signed doctor to me out of the blue.  You also do puzzles like the daughter of engineers that you are – we had to move up to 3 year old puzzles to hold your interest – we are up to a 24 piece jigsaw now!  Recently we started you at Little Gym and I think that will be fantastic for you – you really enjoyed class, especially getting to hang from a bar – who knew you had such arm strength!  I think it’ll be great for your coordination.

The transition to your new room at daycare had a few bumps, but its only been a couple of weeks and already you are excited to see Ms. Tracy and what activity she has setup each morning.  Now the bumps mainly happen while driving the short 3 minutes across the street – like when you realize you didn’t bring lamby (even though you don’t normally bring lamby) and you get upset about it.  Once at school though you get over it and have great days in your new room with your friends.

Such a big girl now and growing every day – I can’t wait to see how you become a big sister and your reaction.   I think you’ll do awesome.

Love,

Mommy

I Think We Are Ready Now…

  • Posted on August 10, 2009 at 6:28 am

Let’s see:

- Baby has crib & pack n play with crib sheets ready for her – check

- Lots and lots of onesies, hats, blankets and socks have been washed in All Free & Clear without fabric softener – check

- We found the bottles from when toddler A was a baby and made sure they had all their parts – check

- We have diapers in sizes N, 1 and 2, along with the extra sensitive wipes for newborns – check

- We got the swing and bouncer out of storage – check

- Toddler A has turned 2, had her party and transitioned to the new room at daycare – check

- We have various samples of pacis in newborn size to try – check

- We have a monitor setup in the nursery – check

- We have a coming home outfit for the baby – check

- Have at least one date night out – check

- We have a name for the baby – umm…. well… we have a list of a few??

Okay I think those were our main things – we’re ready!  I’m 37 weeks on Wednesday and whenever this little miss decides to come, we can’t wait to meet her.  And figure out her name!  And introduce her to our friends & family and her big sister of course.

Stay Tuned…. and don’t forget to place your bets on when the baby will decide to make her entrance.
